Undergraduate or Graduate Research Stipend Basic Eligibility Requirements:
In order to apply for the Undergraduate or Graduate Research Stipend, you must first meet all of the eligibility requirements listed below:
If you meet the above qualifications, we strongly encourage you to apply. However, in addition to these basic eligibility requirements, please review the "Criteria for Selecting an Applicant" section below to further determine the kind of applicant in which we are seeking.
- You feel that you are the individual described in the goal section of this year's stipend.
- You must be a citizen or permanent resident of one or more of the following countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, or the United States.
- You must be a fluent English speaker and at least conversational in a Scandinavian Language.
- If you are an American (USA) citizen or permanent resident, you must have been admitted to or currently enrolled in a Scandinavian country (Denmark, Norway, or Sweden) university/college at the time of application. If you have recently been admitted, please note that you will not be able to receive a stipend until you provide proof of enrollment.
- If you are a Scandinavian/Nordic citizen or permanent resident, you must have been admitted to or currently enrolled in an American (USA) university/college at the time of application. If you have recently been admitted, please note that you will not be able to receive a stipend until you provide proof of enrollment.
- You must have a strong academic history with high grades/marks in all previous coursework. Only grades of only "A" and "B" on the U.S. grading are accepted as having a strong academic history.
- You must be conducting research for a research project, thesis, or dissertation. An undergraduate or master's thesis, research for a course project, capstone project, or dissertation for a doctorate program fulfills this requirement. The type of collegiate program and/or topic of the project is not relevant. Therefore, almost all graduate students are eligible to apply and most undergraduate students. Additionally, the stage in which the individual is at in the project is not relevant so long as the project has not been completed.

Criteria for Selecting an Applicant:
While the following are not required of an applicant, due to a high number of qualified applicants, the following are heavily considered during the selection process:

- You have relevant work or internship experience in relation to your current program of study.
- You have lived in both the United States and Scandinavia.
- Applicants who are active or former military in the United States or Scandinavia are given priority.
- Applicants who currently work or have worked in a Scandinavian country's embassy or consulate or a United States embassy or consulate are given priority.
- Applicants who applied for last year's stipend and were not granted a stipend are given priority.
- Applicants who are conducting a research project on any aspect of the Scandinavian culture and/or language are given priority.
- Ethical standards: the selected applicant must demonstrate behavior that is/has been ethical and professional in his/her current and previous program(s) of study and/or work experience(s).
- Motivation: the selected applicant must demonstrate self-motivation and initiative in his/her own personal life in regards to personal, academic, and career goals.
- Integrity: the applicant must demonstrate academic and personal integrity. Any notice or mention of poor academic or personal behavior/choices when evaluating an applicant will lead to automatic dismissal of the applicant.
- Intellect: the applicant must demonstrate the he/she strives for academic excellence. Considered is the applicant's program of enrollment, research project, and letters of recommendation.
- Communication skills: the applicant must demonstrate that he/she is successful in communicating professionally when it comes to oral and written presentation. Fluency in English is required and demonstration of oral and written proficiency in a Scandinavian language must be at an intermediate level.
